Laptop Battery Madness

It seems like a laptop battery party is going on in the world of computing.

Now Panasonic, hot on the heals of Dell and Sony are recalling laptop batteries. Initially over 6000 are being recalled from the CF-W4G Let's Note W4 laptop.

The problems apparantly arise if the owner occasionally drops the computer or puts it down on a table very roughly, said Akira Kadota, a spokesman for the company in Tokyo. On such occasions the small spring in the latch can penetrate the battery pack and cause a short circuit that leads to overheating, he said. Panasonic has documented two cases to-date of this happening with the battery packs under recall.

At the moment it applies only to Japanese shipped units...
