Orange Launches 'Unique' in UK

Orange will unveil its "converged" fixed and mobile phone service today, allowing customers to use a mobile handset to make unlimited calls through their broadband home internet connection.

Unique, to be launched in Britain later this year, will be available to customers who take an Orange mobile and broadband contract. The cost of the service is expected to be based on the company's range of "animal" tariffs. The phone, which connects to Orange's mobile network, as well as Livebox - which is used by many of its one million UK broadband customers to access the web - will be free.

Stream Music to your Mobile Phone

Wireless connectivity in handheld digital music players is gaining ground. The MusicGremlin service with its iPod-like Gremlin player connects with Wi-Fi; Microsoft's much talked about Zune player will also feature Wi-Fi for transferring files. But what if you've already got a handheld — your smartphone for example — and just wish you could use that to listen to your tunes?

Mercora plans to do just that for any device running Windows Mobile 5.0, no matter what the connectivity — EDGE, EV-DO, HSDPA, or Wi-Fi. The company's new offering, called simply "M," couples a software applications for the phones with an online service. You can use it to listen to music stored on your PC or, eventually,  the music stored on the PCs of up to five friends. The company also has "social radio" stations, 1,000+ with customized genres and sub-genres comprised of music submitted by users.

"Mercora spent three years building our network technology to allow access to music from all over the world," says Avikk Ghose, the company vice president of business development. "Our software lets people Webcast or share entire music collections."

The current Mercora service has about one million users spread across 140 countries. It's far from U.S. centric, with about 70% of the traffic coming from outside the states.

Google Launched new Xmas Services

Busy in time for the Christmas shopping rush, google is busy expanding and remodelling its search services.

Firstly, when people search for products on Google.com, the system will present them with another search box so that they can refine their query.

Secondly, after people refine their query, Google takes them to a second page populated with product results from the Google Base listings service.

And to complete the refinement, Google will begin to wipe away its Froogle shopping branding to replace it with the enhanced Google Base listing service.

In short, Google are consolidating their offerings and integrating their search services.

MSN Search Commits Suicide

Microsoft has committed hari-kari on its MSN Search but fear not, a new star is born "Windows Live" branded search - is now finally out of beta.

For some time, the Windows Live brand has been appearing in a multitude of beta forms. With trademark Web 2.0 styling, Microsoft has been gradually testing all its key MSN services in the new Windows Live format.

Many people are already using the new MS Live Messenger, or MSN Live Writer, Mail, Academic and QnA. Microsofts plan was obvious from the start with MSN search's days numbered as soon as the successful release of Windows Live was activated

After huge amounts of testing and bug fixing, Windows Live Search has today replaced MSN Search. You may notice that a temporary redirect (301) will now take you to the Windows Live Search page.

Try it for yourself: http://search.msn.com

YouTube goes legal with Warner

Could this be the end of fun and freedom on YouTube.com ?  Its our favourite site to search and watch home videos without license but with complete freedom.  We've known for a long time that YouTube.com have an unsustainable business model with them burning gigabytes of bandwidth every few minutes.  Their income streams are limited and constrained and with the risk of a lawsuit looming something had to be done.

So YouTube today signed a deal with media giant Warner Music to allow its material to be used legally.
It means interviews and videos by Warner's artists can be used in return for a slice of advertising revenue.

Good news for everyone who records ans uploads their vids for us to enjoy,
he agreement also covers the use of material in homemade videos, which form a large part of YouTube's content.

Keep it up guys, keep it free...

Unofficial Google Sites

More and more we are seeing Unofficial Google sites. So what is to be done ? do they actually contradict any law and do they take anything from the Google masters themselves.

I reviewed this one The Google Web and found it to be quite honest in its claim to be unnofficial. Its homepage looks very similar to Google and actually uses the Google search bar as its application.  What this site does is acts as a conduit between Google tools and the user looking to make some money using various Google platforms.

The closest thing to illegal may be the logo, but even that is quite inoffensive.

MP4 from Maplin

The biggest threat to the iPod isn't Microsoft's Zune but the A93GC, a 2GB player from Maplin. And the best feature that will send Apple into a panic? According to the Maplin, it's 'easier on the eye' than the iPod Nano.

Ignorning this pretty poor USP, what we have here is a great priced (under £100) little player that won't be taking sales off any of the big boys but will offer a lot for the penny-conscious gadget fan.

As well as the 2GB of storage and the usual music-playing abilities, it'll also play games and handle photos and video on its small 1.5-inch display.

Buy one before the end of the year when the price goes back to the usual £100.

Laptop Battery Madness

It seems like a laptop battery party is going on in the world of computing.

Now Panasonic, hot on the heals of Dell and Sony are recalling laptop batteries. Initially over 6000 are being recalled from the CF-W4G Let's Note W4 laptop.

The problems apparantly arise if the owner occasionally drops the computer or puts it down on a table very roughly, said Akira Kadota, a spokesman for the company in Tokyo. On such occasions the small spring in the latch can penetrate the battery pack and cause a short circuit that leads to overheating, he said. Panasonic has documented two cases to-date of this happening with the battery packs under recall.

At the moment it applies only to Japanese shipped units...

Who next ?
